Abstract
In the presentation, our work progress regarding preparation, scaling up production and application of nanoscale cemented carbides (so called as hard metal materials) will be introduced. Using the unique in-situ synthesized WC-Co composite powder with super-ultrafine nanostructure, the dense ultrafine and nanocrystalline cemented carbide bulk materials were prepared. Detailed studies on the combination of WC and Co phases, characteristics of the WC/Co phase boundaries and WC/WC grain boundaries, and the factors that influence the mechanical properties of the cemented carbides were performed. Particularly, the mechanisms concerning the effects of the orientation relationship and atomic correspondence at interfaces on the fracture toughness and strength of the ultrafine and nanocrystalline cemented carbides were proposed. The developed techniques have been scaled up and the products are applied in industries. Our works are expected to provide effective approach to achieve superior combination properties of the nanostructured cermet materials.

Dr. Xiaoyan Song is a group leader of Metallic Nanomaterials and Computational Materials Science at College of Materials Science and Engineering, Beijing University of Technology and Key Laboratory of Advanced Functional Materials, Ministry of Education of China.
